Cincinatti Trip

The UC Recreation Center is far from perfect (difficult to change light bulbs being the biggest problem for our tour guide, who happens to be a facility manager), but in my opinion surely much better in comparison to those around it.

Graphic/Masterplan

... In defining this landscape masterplan, the characteristics for the planting schemes and public spaces include climatic, natural and urban givens and incorporate a landscape phasing strategy that follows the demolishing and building of the site area by area. The urban ecology will consist of both vertical and horizontal layers: from underground treatments, water streams, and species to (re-used) materials, surface patterns and subsequent layers of use, furnishing and built program...

Transforming Architecture Education

"Transformed architecture practice will require transformation of architecture education. With accelerating trends of sustainability, technology, and collaboration in practice, we are clearly in a time of rapid transition... "

Learning Center for EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland

"The project offers an interesting prolongation of and analogy with the philosophy adopted during the first stage of EPFL construction : importance of itinerary, movement, interior courtyards with different surroundings, atmospheres, richness of vegetation, uniqueness and unity whilst still creating diversity... The proposed programme offers a new living space, opens up the possibility of new teaching approaches, everything being integrated into one single building as place of assembly and breeding-ground for enriching encounters and synergies. ..."

The first LEED-certified Parking Garage, hopefully

"Hoping to make history, Santa Monica City officials unveiled what is likely the nation’s first sustainable solar-powered parking structure Tuesday. The six-story, 882-space structure at the Civic Center features photovoltaic roof panels, a storm drain water treatment system, recycled construction materials and energy efficient mechanical systems..." from Lookout News. Super Touch-screen

"...He did it by retrofitting a piece of clear acrylic and attaching LEDs to the side, which provided the light source. To the back, he mounted an infrared camera. When Han placed his fingers on the makeshift screen, some light ricocheted straight down, just as he thought it would, and the camera captured the light image pixel for pixel. The harder he pressed, the more information the camera captured. Han theorized he could design software that would measure the shape and size of each contact and assign a series of coordinates that defined it..." Singapore Suspended Tower

The 153 meter tall tower will be located at the intersection of Scotts Road and Cairnhill Road, in close proximity to Orchard Road, Singapore’s famous shopping and lifestyle street. With 20,000m² of built floor area, the building will provide 68 high-end apartment units with panoramic views. The design strategically maneuvers within the highly regulated building environment to maximize the full potential of the site: Four individual apartment towers are vertically offset from one another and suspended from a central core.

Death By Architecture

Death By Architecture was founded in the mid 90's by a graduate student in Los Angeles as a repository for information on architectural competitions. It subsequently went by the wayside as the editor went to work for Morphosis. It has just recently been revamped and is better than ever, with the goal to be the preeminent source for any and all competition information. Note that the Columbus re-Wired competition is listed. It has an interesting and intuitive graphic format for registration and submission deadlines via an interactive calendar.

Balcony in a frame

The revolutionary balcony Bloomframe is designed and patented by Hofman Dujardin Architects based in Amsterdam The Netherlands. The Research & Development department from Hurks geveltechniek based in Veldhoven The Netherlands turned the design concept into a spectacular functional prototype. The dynamic balcony offers a solution for compact apartments in dense urban areas. By transforming the elevation into a horizontal surface an outdoor terrace is added to an apartment. Bloomframe can play a significant role in the real estate property of the future.

Flight Paths...

http://www.aaronkoblin.com/work/faa/

An interesting research website which documents the flight patterns across the United States for roughly 24 hours in fast forward. Flight paths were given colors, and traced against a black background.

The method for producing the work comes from an open source programming platform known as Processing, and can be found here.

Several artists and architects have begun exploiting this relatively easy to learn language for aesthetic affect. Complexification is one such example. Enjoy.
